Place Description

Bow Street lies 3 1/2 miles north of Aberystwyth on the A487. The name is an anomaly as it’s an English name whereas all villages and hamlets surrounding are distinctly in the Welsh language. One strong argument put forward is that the former incumbent family at Plas Gogerddan, the Pryce family, for some considerable time provided the Member of Parliament for the area and when the village grew from three smaller hamlets into one much larger entity, they renamed it Bow Street. The wider area surrounding the village is known as Tirymynach…’the land of the monks.’ There is a ruin down in the Clarach Valley (part of Bow Street) that provides evidence that might be the case. However, the area is also close to Strata Florida which has a huge significance in religious terms to the area and historically for Wales. In modern times, Bow Street has developed into a much larger area of strategic significance to the growth of North Ceredigion with the expansion of the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Science (IBERS) which is part of Aberystwyth University at Plas Gogerddan, which spans the two county council wards of Tirymynach and Trefurig. Following this expansion and growth of the village a £10.6 million Transportation Hub consisting of a new rail stop, bus station and free car parking opened on 14/02/21 on the entrance north into the village which is proving more and more popular with commuters to Aberystwyth and those wishing to travel further afield via Shrewsbury by train, it also provides an easily accessible public transport link to IBERS for work, study and visiting purposes.
